1. Why We Started With One Paddle

LUCORAS / Build Notes

Why we started
with one paddle.

We began with four possibilities. We chose to give one our full attention.

We originally planned to launch four paddles.

Two performance tiers. And within each tier, one paddle built more toward offense and another toward control. From a business perspective, it made sense. More products could cover more players. More options could create more opportunities to sell. But once we started building the product, we changed our minds.

Because before we truly understood what made a paddle worth making, launching four of them would not make us more capable. It would simply give us four SKUs.

More choice does not always mean a better choice

The sports equipment market is not short on options. One brand can offer multiple shapes, thicknesses, materials, constructions, and yearly revisions. For players who understand exactly what they want, those differences can be meaningful. For everyone else, they create another task:

research everything before deciding what to buy. That runs against one of the reasons we created LUCORAS. We believe a brand should do more than place products in front of people. A brand should take responsibility for part of the selection process. If we have access to more information about materials, manufacturing, testing and player feedback, then more of that complexity should stay on our side.

Not yours.

So we turned four paddles back into one

That does not mean we believe one paddle can be right for everyone. And it does not mean LUCORAS will only ever make one model. It means something simpler: On day one, we did not need to answer every question. We decided to focus on one:

If we could only make one paddle today, which one would we genuinely want to use ourselves — and feel comfortable putting into someone else’s hands?

From there, we started removing. Instead of deciding how many product lines we needed and then finding paddles to fill them, we reversed the process. Test first. Compare first. Understand what the different constructions actually change. Then remove every option that does not have a strong enough reason to exist.

What remained became the foundation we were willing to keep working on.

One paddle is also a constraint

Fewer SKUs do not automatically make a better product. What matters is the constraint they create. If we begin with one paddle, there are fewer places to hide. If the grip does not feel right, we have to address it. If the surface is not performing where we want it to, we have to keep testing.

If the visual design does not feel timeless enough, we cannot distract from it with another colorway or another collection. If the packaging is unnecessary, we have to rethink it.

When you choose to offer one answer, that answer has to survive more questions.

That is exactly what we want. Instead of spreading our attention across a large product catalogue, we would rather concentrate it on fewer products and make each of them more complete.

We do not reinvent things just to call them original

Building our first paddle also led us to another principle: We do not reinvent something simply to prove that we changed it. If a construction has already been tested in the real world, our first job is not necessarily to replace it. Our job is to understand it. Why does it work?

What deserves to stay? What actually needs improvement? And what would only make the product look “new” without making it meaningfully better? QUEST did not begin from an entirely blank sheet of paper. We started with proven manufacturing capabilities and existing technical foundations, then used testing to decide what deserved to stay and what needed to change.

That distinction matters to us. Our goal is not: to make a paddle look like we modified it. Our goal is: to make sure every modification earns its place.

“One Paddle” is not a minimalism slogan

Starting with one paddle is not an aesthetic exercise. It is a way of working. Doing less forces every decision to have a stronger reason behind it. It also requires restraint. When something already works, we should not replace it simply because a product calendar says it is time for something new.

LUCORAS will make more products in the future. When a real group of players has a meaningfully different need — and when we believe we can provide a genuinely different answer — another paddle should exist. But it should exist because: there is a reason for it to exist. Not because:

the catalogue looks too small.

QUEST is our answer for now

We eventually called our first paddle: QUEST. The name was not decided at the beginning of development. It became increasingly obvious after months of comparing, testing, removing and reconsidering. Because that was what we had been doing all along. Not searching for more answers.

Searching for what was actually worth keeping. The first QUEST is the answer we have arrived at for now. It will not be the final answer. But until we find a good enough reason to change it, we would rather keep working on this one.

One paddle first.
One clear answer at a time.
